Services we offer at Princess Animal Hospital

MEDICAL CONSULTATIONS:

A medical consultation can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. Consultations are available Monday through Saturday, including evenings. If you or your pet is unable to come to our hospital, we offer other convenient options. Please telephone us for details.

We schedule thirty minutes for each new or sick pet we examine. After your consultation with your veterinarian, a registered veterinary technologist will ensure that your pet's care has been explained to your satisfaction. We want you to feel comfortable with the diagnostic and treatment plans you request for your pet. We provide you with the ability to make an informed decision.

SURGERY:

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is now available
  • Click here to learn more about laparoscopic surgery.
  • Performing your pet's surgery using laparoscopy has been proven to reduce post operative pain by 65%.
  • When possible, we will use this new technique to minimize pain and the rate of post operative complications in your pet.
If your pet is scheduled for surgery at Princess Animal Hospital we will:
  • ask you and your pet to arrive at the hospital between 8am and 9am. This gives us time with you to thoroughly explain the treatment your pet will receive that day.

  • administer intravenous fluids to your pet before they receive any medication. These fluids greatly reduce the incidence of anesthetic related health problems and allow us immediate access to your pet's vein in case medications are needed.

  • have one of our veterinarians examine your pet and interpret your pet's blood values before administering an anesthetic, increasing the safety during your pet's procedure. We will take precautions to identify and treat medical problems before an anesthetic.

  • monitor your pet's heart with an electrocardiogram while they are under anesthetic.

  • monitor your pet's blood pressure while they are under anesthetic, and monitor the amount of anesthetic required. The monitoring will be done by a registered veterinary technologist whose sole responsibility is to monitor your pet.

  • ensure that your pet awakens from anesthetic with minimal pain by giving them post operative pain medication.

  • ensure that your pet awakens from an anesthetic lying on blankets, and a warmed oat bag. This helps your pet regain their body temperature, and makes anesthetic recovery more safe.

  • ensure that you go home with oral pain medication to help your pet recuperate comfortably.

RADIOSURGERY FOR DOGS AND CATS:

Princess Animal Hospital offers radiosurgery as an option over traditional scalpel surgery for the pets under our care. This technology is widely utilized in the human medical specialties due to the benefits of decreased bleeding and post-surgical pain and swelling. In addition, when removing a growth we are able to minimize inadvertent spread of abnormal cells because as we cut, the blood and lymphatic vessels are sealed. Its use is beneficial for almost all procedures we perform. radiosurgery at Princess Animal Hospital

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING:

Princess Animal Hospital uses telemedicine technology. Telemedicine is the transmission of X-ray and ultrasound images via the internet to specialists who are world renowned in their field.

Princess Animal Hospital uses X-rays and ultrasound to assess internal organs without having to perform invasive surgery. With advances in telemedicine, we have access to the best veterinary minds in the world. A report can be sent to us within 20 minutes of your pet's data reaching the specialist.

DENTAL CARE:

At Princess Animal Hospital we offer services to care for your pet's oral health. We understand that illness in your pet's mouth will cause your pet pain, and will lead to other medical problems.

We use dental radiographs to determine if your pet has soreness beneath the gum line. This pain cannot be identified any other way. If pets require a tooth extraction, we ensure that they are comfortable both during and after their surgery, with dental freezing and medications.

HIP ARTHRITIS IN DOGS:

At Princess Animal Hospital, your pet's hips can be screened to determine the statistical probability of their developing hip arthritis in the future. The Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program has provided us with an objective way to evaluate your pet's hips, which relies on measurements of the hip joints to evaluate the degree of laxity within the joints. Dr. White at Princess Animal Hospital is accredited to perform this procedure.

If screening radiographs for hip dysplasia are taken early in puppyhood and the hips are found to be abnormal, there is a new treatment which can DRAMATICALLY improve the dog's hip conformation. Juvenile Pubic Symphyosiodesis (JPS) is a minor surgical procedure which can be performed at the time of spay or castration. It will improve the conformation of the hip joint. With that, we expect your dog to have the benefit of less arthritis as they age, or hopefully, no arthritis at all.

MEDICINE, OPTHALMOLOGY & SURGERY:

Princess Animal Hospital is equipped with laboratory equipment which allows us to immediately analyze your pet's blood. The results provide us with enough information to start treating your pet safely. We are able to analyze blood the same day a surgery is scheduled, making it very unlikely your pet's health status will change between the time of blood collection, and the time of surgery.

We can accurately test the pressure inside the eyes of your pets. Tonometry allows us to electronically measure elevated intra-ocular pressures (glaucoma), and decreased intra-ocular pressures (uveitis) accurately. Both of these conditions are common medical problems for dogs and cats.

The veterinarians at Princess Animal Hospital have a special interest in advanced soft tissue surgery, and in orthopaedic surgery.

KENNEL/BOARDING:

At Princess Animal Hospital, dogs who stay with us are walked at least three times daily. We are air conditioned, and monitored for fire and unwelcome intruders at all times. Our regular boarding pets are often invited to join our staff for extra attention in the lunch room, so they have a great "at home" feeling while staying with us. kennel/boarding

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY:

Princess Animal Hospital continues to support local charities, including the Kingston Humane Society, Almost Home, Cataraqui Rotary Club, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Cancer Society.

In October 2004 we hosted a combined Open House/Halloween Party. This event raised enough money to purchase an otoscope and an opthalmoscope for the Kingston Humane Society.
